Bush's stem cell policy received with mixed emotions

"The announcement last night by President George W. Bush regarding stem cell research is received with mixed emotions," said Mr. Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition.

"We applaud his support of adult (somatic) stem cell research. Such research is ethical and closer to actual medical application. We hope the researchers will take advantage of the federal funding of this research so that calls for destructive embryonic stem cell research will cease," continues Mr. Hughes.

"We are concerned that his support for limited experimentation with the 60 lines already created will open the flood gates to full scale embryonic experimentation," said Mr. Hughes.

Campaign Life Coalition calls on the Canadian government to enact legislation prohibiting the destruction of embryos for research purposes.
